4 Post-Massage Self-Care Tips

Anyone who has ever experienced a treatment by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) knows how good it feels after a massage.It’s an excellent state of physical and mental well-being and one that we think you should do all that you can to preserve. Yet, when we go back to our everyday lives, the functional challenges and repetitive activities that often lead us to the massage table are often right there waiting for us. To help you keep feeling better a little longer, here are five self-care tips you can use after your massage.

Exercise
Assuming you’re not dealing with an acute injury, there is no reason vigorous activity and regular massage therapy can’t peacefully coexist. However, if you’re going to take part in a particularly gruelling event or hard workout session at the gym, it’s often best to do so before your massage treatment.

Working out too soon after a massage (less than 24-48 hours, talk to your RMT) may be more exhausting, or it may be beneficial.  It depends on the person.  What are your goals for treatment and what activities are you planning to do?  Depth of treatment doesn’t matter, as no therapy should be overly painful.  Make sure you communicate with your RMT and let them know what your treatment goals are.

Drink Water?
The myth that we are all dehydrated and need to drink more water is unsubstantiated.  Massage DOES NOT release toxins into the blood.  This is an old belief that is still held on by many in the rehab and fitness industry.  Our goal at Achieve Health is to keep our treatments and advice simple.  If you are thirsty, drink water.

Maintain Movement
All too often, our patients are coming to us with signs of pain and stiffness resulting from a sedentary lifestyle.  Repetitive motions like reaching for the keyboard or mouse are inherently not dangerous, but when combined with lack of movement throughout the day and high workplace stress, painful events can occur.  Speak to your RMT about your workplace set up, and talk about movements and activities that you can use between massage appointments to help alleviate some of the discomforts.

Take it Easy!
Many massage clients view their appointment as the perfect opportunity to get some much-needed rest and relaxation.
